At last night’s CHAMPION GATE show at Korakuen Hall, Masaaki Mochizuki defeated Masato Yoshino to become the 13th Open the Dream Gate champion! He is also the the second repeat winner after CIMA.

However, of equal magnitude, WORLD-1 lost their Triangle Gate contra Unit Disband match which means the leading babyface unit is no more.

After his win, Mochi stated that he believes the Dream Gate champion should be aligned with a unit so invited Susumu, Yoshino and PAC to join. He also called out KAMIKAZE and invited them although it appears that YAMATO is the only member to have shown interest so far.  YAMATO did also challenge for the Dream Gate title which Mochi accepted due to their previous match during YAMATO’s reign (probably MOTY for Dragon Gate last year in fact).

My personal opinion of these events are that this is a very good thing. While Dragon Gate has been trying to create new stars, I think Yoshino wasn’t quite Dream Gate material in my mind. A short run is good and giving the belt to someone like Mochi brings in another credible champion. I think we’ll be guaranteed a lot of good matches from him as champion.

So with the new developments there are suddenly a lot of question marks over who will move where. K-ness., Hulk and Kotoka are all unaccounted for and if YAMATO has eyes on this new unit then KAMIKAZE is also suddenly looking shaky. Will the returning Taku Iwasa play an important role? Maybe we could see a reunion with Araken. I will be keeping a close eye on the upcoming Hakata Star Lanes show that’s for sure. Let us know your theories on how this will all play out in the comments.

The new mochizuki unit is just so odd and random. I also thought it was strange he wouldn’t invite araken & fuji even though they were in their corner. Obviously it’s already been set up for Araken to reunite with Iwasa and it’s not out of the question that Fuji tags along with them. KAMIKAZE would still be pretty strong if they joined. Now DG just lacks and overall babyface unit. Since BxB Hulk, K-Ness, & Kotoka have no homes and we can assume KAGE and Tozawa won’t be returning to Kamikaze that could make a pretty good youngster unit. Shisa could be thrown in there and he K-Ness could act as mentors or something. Just some ideas floating around my head.

it looks like i might be the only one who enjoyed yoshino s reign :(
he did not do any bad matches in my opinion, but well it s probably a matter of taste

i think k-nesuka will join the former veteran unit,YAMATO will stay in his stable that will join the returning Tozawa and that Hulk and Yoshino will be the co-leaders of a young generation stable with Tomoakai,PAC,KZY and Kotoka
as i said before, there are no reason that segment which was only broadcasted in usa,has any consequences on Tozawa s status in japan, especially when we know kamikaze is not booked in the same way there, and he was fired by a guy who works in wwe now,and no japaneses fans ever saw in their land

    • mastermind

it’s the same angle they did for Shingo, he goes to the US for a long period of time and the japanese fans are expecting him to re-unite with his former teammates. When he comes back he will not re-unite with KAMIKAZE. I’m almost sure of this, they treated him like shit when he left, he was feuding with his own teammate Cyber Kong. I don’t see KAMIKAZE bringing him back in, except for maybe his japan return where he will likely betray them.

  • ryo saeba

my match of the year in 2010 was Hulk vs Shingo

  • Zacky

I also enjoyed Yoshino’s reign Mr. Saeba, but then again I’m a huge Speed star mark now so maybe that’s why, I agree the title defenses weren’t bad or anything its just too much was going on at the time to really focus on his title reign. Doi turning heel, Warriors going full heel, too much Ricochet in DG, personally I prefer PAC because while he’s a High Flyer he also has an excellent technical prowess that makes him better then Ricochet IMO.

As for this new unit that Mochi is making I’d personally love to see it having Mochi, Yokosuka, Yoshino, PAC, & YAMATO teaming at least to stop Blood Warriors would be good plus that youth unit that Mastermind mention sounds like it’d be an impressive unit for one filled with mostly young lions and people who are usually the loss posts of their units. Though I would rather see K-Ness in the Mochi unit just so they don’t break up K-Nesuka

  • Kazuma Kiryu

Am I the only one who think that mochi sucks as the new champion? I think it is the best for DG that he keeps the title for a short time and then lose it to a new young talent or to YAMATO and than a better reign then his first which was very short.

  • mastermind

I think he’s holding it until July, BxB Hulk should win KoG and challenge Mochi at Kobe World and win the belt.

  • mastermind

Oh yeah, I’ve seen the loser revival match between BW & World-1, I was skeptical but it’s actually a fun match I think it’d be a good match to have every now and then like the naniwa-shiki match

  • Kazuma Kiryu

I wouldn,t like to see BxB become the future DG champion, in my humble opnion he sucked in his too long reign as the Freedom Champion. It would be nicer to finally see a Heel champion in DG.

  • Seth

While I’m definitely no fan of BxB Hulk, I think it is inevitable we will get a title reign from him. He is still really over after all.

I do agree we need a heel champion, but really, I don’t see that happening right now (who would it even be? It’s not going to be Doi or CIMA so that really only leaves Gamma).

  • mastermind

Shingo, YAMATO or Cyber Kong would be awesome as heel champions but don’t expect that anytime soon and don’t expect a Gamma reign ever until he starts acting more serious, he’s pretty much a goof, Don Fuji has more of a shot winning the belt than Gamma does as things stand right now

    • Kazuma Kiryu

I really hope for a second YAMATO reign and better as a heel. But we will see what the future brings. Unfortunately DG ruined the chance to give GAMMA the belt when he was big during the Mo’z period. How his situation is currently I don’t think he will get a single titles reign in DG anytime soon. As it looks like he will be the only KOG winner that didn’t won the dream gate.

    • mastermind

To be fair he didn’t really win the King Of Gate he kicked CIMA in the balls and they did an angle where CIMA couldn’t continue so DK stepped in and won the match but technically Gamma won the tournament. He didn’t receive his Dream Gate shot for 3 months after and it was a no dq match in Hakata Star lanes for an infinity taping. So he was really never a threat at the title especially since CIMA had the belt and he was running through everybody.

    • Seth

I think it was pretty clear that ball kick wasn’t a work. But anyway, yes I don’t think Gamma will get a shot but he is number 3 in BW so the only other likely heel candidate. Hence, I don’t think there will be a heel champ anytime soon.

Both Shingo and YAMATO should have been heels during their reigns, but that’s just not how Dragon Gate rolls unfortunately.

    • ryo saeba

      that s sucks.
it s the only promotion in the world, where you can t be a heel champion……
for me,it s main my complaint about this promotion

i think it s must because dgate is the promotion of women in japan,so they have to put “happy ending”
maybe, most of the dgate women fans are crybabies like SMASH s Shuri Kondo,so they try to satisfy them……..

@Kiryu I m happy you also liked Yoshino s reign;and i can say you i also Yakuza like you ,it s fun game

    • Seth

Haha yes I love Yakuza too ;) playing through 4 now.

    • mastermind

DG has had 2 heel champions, Magnitude & Liger, NJPW’s only heel champions before Nakamura where either Gaijin or Outsiders, NOAH has never had a heel champion, AJPW is the only one who regularly puts their titles on heels

    • mastermind

and the kick was a work, CIMA worked every show from there on until his serious injury

    • ryo saeba

Noah does work not like most of the others promotions.
They do not have the usual sekigun vs large heel faction war,so that s not comparable with dgate
If they do not put a lot of effort on buiding credible heel contenders for ghc,i can t be disappointed they do not have a heel champ

Unlike Noah,Dgate put much more emphasis and effort on building credible heel, that s why i think it sucks they did not had any heel champions since 2005 or so.

    • Seth

The fact CIMA was working the injury after the fact doesn’t mean the actual incident was a work. I maintain my belief that it wasn’t.

Liger and Magnitude also don’t REALLY count as heel champs as neither were main roster when they won (Liger was an outsider and Magnitude just a contractor). However, this is a fair point to be taken into consideration.

  • Kazuma Kiryu

Correct me if I am wrong but weren’t Chono and Muta also heels during there IWGP Heavyweight reigns. And yes GAMMA played it dirty at the 2007 KOG but he won it anyway.

Another reason why DG doesn’t want a heel champion is they want the champ to act as the face of the company and as a spokesperson. ( and the girlie attendences are also related to that)

@Ryo: yeah Yakuza is a cool game  , can’t wait for 5 it will be much different than the rest.

  • mastermind

Muta maybe but definately not Chono when he was champion, maybe when Chono won the G1 as a member of the nWo but not the iwgp title

  • ryo saeba

    @kazuma kiryu

Number 5 will be the one with zombies?.
If it s that one, yeah it ll be a real change,we won t be able to talk with women on bars

I mainly like Yakuza because it s clear copy of the awesome Shenmue of Yu Suzuki(i m talking about the gameplay of course)
I also like the charisma of the characters and the violences of the fights
When you re doing your finisher,it s really really painful for your opponent
    Overall good game

  • Kazuma Kiryu

Yeah it will be with zombies and also with some other suprises SEGA said. It’s going to debut in japan and the end of this year it will take another year or even longer before it will arrive in other parts of the world.
